About Flynn
NOTE FOR THE DSP: You already know Flynn, the house, and much of his daily routine -that's a huge advantage. Your job this summer is to put on the "DSP hat": be intentional about ISP goals, document what you observe, and support Flynn in ways that are a little more structured than regular sibling time. The relationship is already there. This plan helps you use it purposefully.
On patience and tone
Flynn picks up on impatience immediately. A short response, a clipped tone, or a frustrated sigh lands hard - especially coming from his brother, whose opinion means a lot to him. When things feel slow or repetitive, that is exactly when he needs the most patience. Take a breath before redirecting. Give him more time than you think he needs. If you feel yourself getting frustrated, suggest a snack break or a change of scene for both of you. The goal is never compliance. It is connection.
| What Flynn loves | Minecraft, Among Us, Bloons TD, Words with Friends, Dog Man graphic novels, building with scrap materials, movies, music production, electronic music, ranch animals |
| Communication style | Follows single-step instructions best. Visuals and written lists are very helpful. May confuse opposites (e.g., "always" vs. "never"). Can struggle to communicate emotions or complex ideas. |
| What helps him thrive | Gentle correction, positive focus, creative and energetic energy, a gentle demeanor. He shines when someone celebrates what he can do rather than highlighting what he can't. |
| Patience and tone | Never be short with Flynn. Slow down, give him more time than you think he needs, and redirect gently. If you feel frustrated, take a break together. His trust in you is the whole foundation of this. |
| Sensory triggers | Sensory overload, unexpected hugging or touching, being teased. When upset: may engage in negative self-talk, cry, slam a door, or scream. Give time and space -then help him talk through it gently. |
| Health reminders | Be aware of seizure risk -know the signs (staring spells, random vomiting, loss of awareness). |
| Eating / ARFID | Flynn has ARFID and eats a limited range of foods on a gluten-free diet. He drinks Kate Farms shakes for protein. Cue him to slow down at meals -he can overstuff his cheeks. Food exploration is a goal; use the "Food Scientist" approach with zero pressure. |
Section 2
ISP Goals at a Glance
Flynn has five active goals from his ISP. Every session should touch on at least one. Color coding matches the weekly planner.
Food / ARFID
Model curiosity and openness to food. Use the "Food Scientist" approach -investigate smell, texture, appearance. No pressure to taste. Build a Food Scientist Journal. Daily.
Physical Exercises
Practice physical and sensory processing exercises daily. Get training from mom on the specific exercises. Do them alongside Flynn to normalize it. Daily.
Coping Strategies
Weekly: teach and practice one coping strategy for perceived difficulty or rejection. Examples: deep breathing, positive re-framing ("I can't do it YET"), fine motor calming. Weekly.
Socialization
Model social skills, give gentle feedback on turn-taking and reading cues. Take Flynn to parks, pools, Bend Parks & Rec programs, and community events. Weekly.
Ranch Skills
Support Flynn in completing his ranch chore list. Give verbal cues to double-check (closing gate, cleaning up tools). Build independence -reduce prompts over time. Weekly.

Section 7
Emergency & Key Information
If Flynn is missing
Search the immediate area for 1 minute. If not found, call Kate (541-797-8331). If unreachable, call Eric (650-575-8574). If both unreachable, call 911 and report a missing vulnerable youth.
| Crisis line | Deschutes County Stabilization Center -Crisis Line: (541) 322-7500 ext. 9 · Center: (541) 585-7210 · 63311 NE Jamison Street, Bend, OR 97703 |
| Seizure awareness | Flynn is at elevated risk. Know the signs: staring spells, random vomiting, loss of awareness. If a seizure occurs, keep Flynn safe, time it, and call 911 if it lasts more than 5 minutes. |
| Fire evacuation | Flynn would likely look for supports before exiting. Give clear verbal cues to exit immediately. Help him move quickly. |
| Traffic safety | Remind Flynn to look both ways. He needs physical prompts for traffic safety in unfamiliar areas. |
| Behavior reminders | Triggers: sensory overload, unexpected touch, being teased. Do NOT hug or touch without warning. Give time and space when upset. Then gently help him talk through it. |
